Matthew Newton

Matthew Newton (born Matthew Joseph Newton on 1977-01-22) is an Australian actor, writer, director and former radio host whose career has traversed both Australia and the United States. He first entered the entertainment world as a child, appearing in the children's series Sugar and Spice in 1988 and later gaining recognition in the drama Late For School (1992). His feature‑film debut arrived in 1993 with the cult horror Body Melt, and he went on to secure roles in notable Australian productions such as My Mother Frank (2000) and the teen‑classic Looking for Alibrandi (2000). Internationally, Newton is perhaps best remembered for his turn as the vampire Armand in Queen of the Damned (2002) and a guest appearance on the sci‑fi series Farscape (2001). In addition to acting, he showcased his improvisational skills on Thank God You're Here and briefly co‑hosted a radio show on Nova 96.9 before his contract was terminated amid widely publicised assault allegations. Despite these setbacks, he continued to work behind the camera, writing, directing and starring in the feature Three Blind Mice, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned a Critics Prize at the 2008 London Film Festival. Newton later moved to the United States, where he married Catherine Schneiderman, daughter of former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, in 2017; the couple resides in Austin, Texas. Over recent years he has produced and directed three independent films—From Nowhere, Who We Are Now and Ava—while publicly acknowledging his ongoing efforts to address mental‑health challenges and maintain a sober lifestyle. His complex personal history, marked by multiple legal confrontations and a dedication to artistic reinvention, makes him a uniquely controversial figure within contemporary cinema.
