Lizzie Borden

Lizzie Andrew Borden (July 19, 1860 – June 1, 1927) was an American woman whose name became synonymous with one of the most infamous axe murders in U.S. history. Born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, she was the third child of Andrew Jackson Borden, a wealthy yet frugal property developer, and Sarah Anthony, who died when Lizzie was three. After her mother’s death, her father remarried Abby Durfee Gray, a union that Lizzie later described as opportunistic, and the tension between step‑mother and daughters intensified over control of family assets. Lizzie and her older sister Emma were active in the local Congregational church, teaching Sunday school and participating in temperance and charitable societies, reflecting a respectable social standing that contrasted sharply with the dark events that would later define their legacy. On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found brutally murdered in their home, each struck multiple times with a hatchet‑like weapon; suspicion quickly fell on Lizzie, whose inconsistent statements to police, calm demeanor during the investigation, and alleged presence near the crime scene fueled public outrage. Despite a sensational trial in New Bedford that attracted nationwide media attention, the prosecution failed to present convincing forensic evidence, and after a brief deliberation the jury acquitted her on June 20, 1893, leaving the case an enduring mystery.

After the verdict, Lizzie and Emma relocated to a modern house in Fall River’s affluent Hill district, where Lizzie adopted the name Lizbeth A. Borden and lived a relatively secluded life, managing substantial inherited wealth, owning property, and contributing to local charities such as the Fall River Animal Rescue League. Her later years were marked by social ostracism, a 1897 shoplifting accusation, and a strained relationship with her sister, who moved out in 1905. Lizzie died of pneumonia at age 66 on June 1, 1927; she was interred beside Emma at Oak Grove Cemetery. Her story has been immortalized in folk rhymes, countless books, stage productions, films, and television series, cementing her place in American popular culture as a symbol of unresolved crime and the complexities of gender, class, and media spectacle.
