Lawrence Gordon Clark

Lawrence Gordon Clark (born 15 June 1938) is an English television director, producer, screenwriter and author whose work has left an indelible mark on British horror broadcasting. He began his career at the BBC where he cut his teeth on documentary series such as The Human Side (1964‑1965) and Six Sides of a Square (1966), learning the craft of location shooting and narrative pacing. Inspired by Jonathan Miller’s adaptation of M. R. James’s “Whistle and I’ll Come to You” in 1968, Clark conceived the seminal anthology A Ghost Story for Christmas, a series that aired on BBC One from 1971 to 1978 and defined a generation’s seasonal chills. Clark not only directed the first five installments—The Stalls of Barchester (1971) and A Warning to the Curious (1972) among them—but also wrote and produced the opening two entries, exercising a rare auteur‑like control that set a high visual and atmospheric standard for television horror. The series was notable for being shot entirely on location using 16 mm film, a choice that gave the episodes a grainy, uncanny texture still praised by scholars and fans alike. After the BBC run, Clark carried the M. R. James legacy to ITV with Casting the Runes (1979) for the Playhouse anthology, further cementing his reputation as a master of televised ghost tales. His later directing credits expanded into other genres, including the political thriller miniseries Harry’s Game (1982), the literary adaptation Jamaica Inn (1983), and episodes of popular dramas such as Flambards, Casualty, Pie in the Sky and Dangerfield. In addition to his screen work, Clark published a collection of original short stories titled Telling Stories in 2011, demonstrating his narrative talent beyond the camera.
