Laura Phillips “Laurie” Anderson (born June 5, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American avant‑garde artist whose career spans music, performance art, film, and multimedia installations. Trained originally as a violinist and sculptor, she moved to New York City in 1966 and earned a B.A. magna cum laude from Barnard College in 1969 followed by an M.F.A. in sculpture from Columbia University in 1972, laying a conceptual foundation for her interdisciplinary practice. Her early work combined unconventional sound sources—such as a symphony played on automobile horns in 1969—and visual provocation, exemplified by the iconic Duets on Ice performance in which she skated on a block of ice while playing a violin pre‑recorded track, a piece that only ceased when the ice melted. Anderson achieved unexpected commercial breakthrough in 1981 when the minimalist mantra “O Superman” topped charts in the United Kingdom, prompting a seven‑album contract with Warner Bros. and the release of her debut studio album Big Science (1982). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s she expanded into film with the concert documentary Home of the Brave (1986), contributed soundtracks for Swimming to Cambodia and Monster in a Box, and pioneered interactive media with the CD‑ROM Puppet Motel (1995). A prolific inventor, she created the tape‑bow violin in 1977 and the “talking stick,” a six‑foot MIDI controller that manipulates granular synthesis, both of which feature prominently in her live shows. In 2003 she became NASA’s first artist‑in‑residence, producing The End of the Moon, and her later works such as Landfall (2018) with the Kronos Quartet earned her a Grammy for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Her personal life intersected with music legend Lou Reed, whom she married in 2008; the partnership influenced several collaborative recordings until Reed’s death in 2013. Continually exploring the impact of technology on language and perception, Anderson remains an influential figure in contemporary art, receiving honorary doctorates from institutions including Columbia University and the University of the Arts, and serving as the Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard in 2021.
