Larry Lansburgh

Lawrence Muzzy Lansburgh, known professionally as Larry Lansburgh, was an influential American filmmaker whose career spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, particularly in the realm of animal-themed films. Born on May 18, 1911, in San Francisco, California, Lansburgh initially entered the film industry as a stunt performer in the early 1930s, working on prestigious Cecil B. DeMille productions. However, a significant career shift occurred after a serious injury—breaking his leg during a fall from a horse—which led him to transition into a clerical position at Walt Disney Studios. This seemingly modest beginning proved pivotal, as it was here that he hired Bob Broughton, who would become a significant figure in Disney history, and where Lansburgh himself would gradually transition into production roles. His early work behind the camera included serving as a cameraman during Walt Disney's historic 1941 tour of South America, a journey that resulted in the acclaimed productions The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos, as well as contributing to the beloved film So Dear to My Heart. These experiences honed his skills and established his reputation as a versatile and dedicated filmmaker capable of capturing the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

Throughout his extensive career, Lansburgh distinguished himself as a producer, director, and screenwriter, earning particular renown for his documentary and short films featuring animals. His exceptional talent was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on multiple occasions, with his 1956 film Cow Dog receiving a nomination for Best Live Action Short Subject (Two-Reel). He achieved Oscar glory when his 1957 film Wetback Hound won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Live Action) in 1958, followed by another win in 1961 for The Horse with the Flying Tail, which took home the award for Best Documentary. In 1969, he wrote and directed Hang Your Hat on the Wind for Disney, further cementing his legacy within the studio. Beyond filmmaking, Lansburgh was a passionate equestrian who served as a judge at the American Royal Horse Show, where he met his second wife, Olive. His contributions to cinema were formally recognized in 1998 when he received the prestigious Disney Legends award, and his work continues to be preserved, with his film Dawn Flight being archived by the Academy Film Archive in 2013. Lansburgh passed away on March 25, 2001, at his ranch in Eagle Point, Oregon, leaving behind a rich legacy that bridges the golden age of Hollywood and the evolution of nature documentary filmmaking.
