Knut Erik Jensen

Knut Erik Jensen (born 8 October 1940 in Honningsvåg, Finnmark) is a renowned Norwegian film director whose career spans over four decades of documentary and feature filmmaking. After completing secondary education, he pursued studies in French, Russian and history, which deepened his cultural perspective before he enrolled at the London Film School, where he acquired formal training in cinematic techniques. In 1978 Jensen joined the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), quickly establishing himself as a versatile director of documentaries and short films that explored social realities in the Arctic north and wider Norwegian society. His breakthrough documentary Cool and Crazy (original title Kalde og gale) earned critical acclaim for its vivid portrait of a charismatic band and its reflection on community identity, cementing his reputation as a storyteller with a keen eye for human nuance. Jensen later transitioned to narrative cinema, directing three feature films: Stella Polaris (1993), a haunting drama set against the polar night; Burnt by Frost (1997), which examined the lingering effects of World War II on rural Norway; and Passing Darkness (2000), a psychological thriller that delved into memory and trauma. Throughout his oeuvre he has consistently blended documentary realism with poetic visual style, often employing long takes and natural lighting to emphasize the stark beauty of the Norwegian landscape. In recognition of his cultural contributions, the King of Norway appointed him a Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 2008, a distinction reserved for individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the nation. Jensen continues to work on independent projects and mentor emerging filmmakers, maintaining an active presence in Norway’s film community well into the 2020s.
