Katsuhito Ishii is a prolific Japanese film director and screenwriter whose work spans avant‑garde comedies, surreal animations, and gritty thrillers. Born on 31 December 1966 in Niigata Prefecture, he cultivated a visual sensibility at Musashino Art University before entering the commercial arena with Tohokushinsha Film in 1992, where he quickly amassed numerous advertising awards that honed his rapid‑cut style. His early short, The Promise of August (1995), captured the Japanese Film Grand Prix in the Fantastic Video Section of the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, signaling his readiness for feature filmmaking. Ishii debuted theatrically with Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl (1999), an adaptation of Minetaro Mochizuki’s cult manga, starring Tadanobu Asano and establishing a long‑standing collaboration with the actor. The follow‑up Party 7 (2000) reinforced his reputation for kinetic, hyper‑stylized narratives, featuring an ensemble cast that included Masatoshi Nagase and Yoshio Harada. Between 2001 and 2002 he explored animation through projects such as Hal & Bons and the space‑opera short Trava Fist Planet, while also contributing to the iconic Kill Bill: Volume 1 animation sequence alongside Production I.G.
