What's After the Movie
Joshua Lawrence "Josh" Meador (March 12, 1911 – August 24 1965) was a pioneering American animator whose work helped define the visual language of mid‑century Hollywood special effects. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, Meador spent his early childhood in the Deep South before his family relocated to Columbus, Mississippi in 1918, a move that would later bring him back for burial. He pursued formal training at the Chicago Art Institute, where a chance conversation with an alumnus about a Walt Disney Productions interview set the course of his professional life. Initially reluctant because he preferred commercial art, Meador was eventually persuaded to attend the interview and was hired into Disney’s animation effects department, a division that demanded both artistic imagination and technical ingenuity. During his tenure at Disney, Meador contributed to a string of landmark films, most notably the award‑winning 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), where his effects animation earned the studio an Academy Award for visual effects. His expertise extended beyond Disney; in 1956 he crafted the iconic “Monster from the Id” sequence for MGM’s Forbidden Planet, a sequence that remains a touchstone of science‑fiction cinema. Throughout his career Meador balanced his reputation as a special effects artist, effects animator, and animation director with a private devotion to painting; he created more than two thousand canvases, favoring impressionistic landscapes and seascapes that reflected his Southern roots. Colleagues remembered him as a meticulous craftsman, while friends described him as a painter first, a self‑identification that informed his approach to motion picture artistry. Meador’s life was cut short by a heart attack in August 1965 while residing in Casper, California. He was interred at Friendship Cemetery in his hometown of Columbus, Mississippi, where a historical marker now commemorates his contributions to the art of animation. His legacy endures in the seamless blend of painterly composition and technical innovation that continues to inspire modern visual‑effects artists.
