Jonathan Caouette is an American film director, writer, editor and actor best known for his groundbreaking autobiographical documentary Tarnation (2003), which premiered at Sundance and Cannes and cemented his reputation as an avant‑garde storyteller. Born on May 13, 1975 in Houston, Texas, Caouette grew up in a turbulent household; his mother struggled with severe mental illness and was frequently institutionalized, while his father was absent, leaving him to be raised by grandparents and foster homes. He attended Westbury High School from 1987 to 1990, where he was often bullied for his effeminacy, an experience that later informed the raw honesty of his filmmaking. At the age of twelve he unintentionally inhaled PCP, an episode that clinicians later linked to a lifelong depersonalization disorder, a condition he would later seek to translate into cinematic form. Caouette’s career burst onto the international scene when he edited and directed Tarnation, a collage‑style documentary that weaves home movies, Super‑8 footage and voice‑over to depict his chaotic family life, mental health struggles and moments of fleeting joy. Critics praised its organic structure and poetic visual language, noting how it captures the “half‑asleep, half‑awake” state he describes as a waking dream. Following the success of Tarnation, he directed the music‑festival documentary All Tomorrow’s Parties (2009) and the experimental short All Flowers in Time (2010), demonstrating his versatility across genre and format. In 2011 he released Walk Away Renee, produced by French fashion designer Agnes B., which premiered at Cannes and further explored themes of memory and identity. Beyond directing, Caouette has acted in independent features such as Fat Girls (2006) and John Cameron Mitchell’s cult hit Shortbus, and he appeared in the German documentary Wie ich lernte die Zahlen zu lieben about OCD. Openly gay, he lives in New York City with his husband David and their son Josh, who appeared in the 2008 documentary Bi the Way.
