What's After the Movie
John A. Davis, born John Alexander Davis on October 26, 1961 in Dallas, Texas, is an American film director, screenwriter, animator, composer, voice actor, and astrophotographer whose career spans over four decades. From an early age he experimented with his parents' 8 mm camera, filming action figures in stop‑motion and becoming fascinated after seeing the stop‑motion piece Icarus at a festival, an experience that set the foundation for his lifelong love of animation. While studying at Southern Methodist University he worked on the stop‑motion film The Bermuda Triangle (1981) and graduated in 1984, after which he joined K&H Productions and collaborated with 2‑D animator Keith Alcorn, transitioning from claymation to traditional animation. In 1987, after K&H’s bankruptcy, Davis co‑founded DNA Productions, where he conceived the concept that would become the cult classic Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The original short, Johnny Quasar, debuted at SIGGRAPH and attracted the attention of Steve Oedekerk, leading to a successful feature film that earned Davis an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2002, as well as a television series, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius. Beyond the Neutron franchise he directed The Ant Bully (2006) after being approached by Tom Hanks, and he was attached to a now‑canceled Neopets feature. Since 2007 Davis has become a respected astrophotographer, publishing wide‑field images in astronomy magazines and curating NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, while also founding the Astrophotography Special Interest Group (APSIG) within the Texas Astronomical Society. His diverse body of work demonstrates a rare blend of technical skill, creative storytelling, and scientific curiosity that continues to influence both animation and astronomy communities.
