Ignacio F. Iquino

Ignacio Ferrés Iquino, better known as Ignacio F. Iquino, was a prolific Spanish filmmaker whose career spanned five decades, from the mid‑1930s to the early 1980s. Born on October 25, 1910, in Valls, Alt Camp, he was the son of the renowned theater and film composer Ramón Ferrés and actress Teresea Iquino, which immersed him in a creative environment from an early age. He first entered the film industry in 1934, initially working as a cinematographer and editor before expanding his talents to directing, screenwriting, and producing. Throughout his long tenure, Iquino became especially noted for his low‑budget “paella westerns,” the Spanish counterpart to the Italian spaghetti western, featuring stars such as Richard Harrison and Fernando Sancho, and for collaborating with genre performers like Erika Blanc in “Stagecoach of the Condemned” (1970). His versatility allowed him to adapt to shifting cinematic trends, and after the abolition of censorship in 1975 he turned his focus toward erotic cinema, creating provocative titles like Los violadores del amanecer, La Basura está en el ático, and Los sueños húmedos de patrizia. Iquino also distinguished himself as an early advocate for transsexual actresses, giving visibility to talents such as Cristine Berna and Tessa Arno, thereby pushing the boundaries of representation in Spanish film. In the final years of his career, he continued to produce and direct until his retirement in 1984, leaving behind a diverse oeuvre that reflected both commercial sensibilities and daring experimentation. He died in Barcelona on April 29, 1994, at the age of 83, remembered as a tenacious pioneer of Spanish genre cinema.
