Grant Gee

Grant Robert Gee is a British film maker, photographer and cinematographer, born on 1 November 1964 in Plymouth, Devon, England. He first pursued an academic path, studying Geography at St Catherine's College, Oxford, before completing postgraduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In the early 1990s, Gee entered the music‑video arena, collaborating on U2’s Zoo TV and Zoo Radio projects and partnering with director Mark Neale on several experimental pieces for Kudos Productions, including the multimedia installation The Memory Palace for Expo ’92. His early short‑form work—such as a 27‑minute film for progressive house band Spooky displayed at the Centre Georges Pompidou—demonstrated a keen visual style that blended live performance, sound, and avant‑garde cinematography, establishing him as an innovative voice in the British visual arts scene.

The breakthrough of Gee’s career arrived with the 1998 documentary Meeting People Is Easy, which chronicled Radiohead’s intensive touring following OK Computer and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Long Form Music Video. Subsequent films like Joy Division (2007), Patience: After Sebald (2011), and the collaborative Innocence of Memories (2015) with novelist Orhan Pamuk showcase his fascination with music, memory, and place, often employing lyrical, observational camera work and a contemplative narrative rhythm. Gee has also contributed to creative‑commons initiatives, served as Director of Photography for the A Swarm of Angels project, and produced a ten‑minute portrait of climbers on the Old Man of Hoy. His body of work—spanning documentaries, short films, and music videos for artists like Blur—continues to be celebrated for its emotional depth, experimental form, and the way it captures cultural moments with both intimacy and visual daring.
