Gianfranco Rosi

**Gianfranco Rosi** (born *30 November 1963*) is an Italian‑American documentary filmmaker whose *cinematic eye* has turned the camera toward some of the world’s most marginalised communities. Born in Asmara, Ethiopia, where his father managed the foreign section of an IRI‑owned bank, Rosi was whisked back to Italy at age eleven to escape the turmoil of the Eritrean War of Independence. He spent his formative years shuttling between Italy and Turkey before enrolling in medicine at the University of Pisa, only to abandon the program at nineteen and enrol at New York University’s film school, a decision that cemented his transatlantic identity and later earned him dual citizenship. After graduating, Rosi’s debut feature, *Boatman* (1993), emerged from five years of immersive work along the Ganges, earning spots at Sundance, Locarno, Toronto and Amsterdam and establishing his reputation for patient, anthropological storytelling.

Rosi’s subsequent films have repeatedly broken new ground in the festival circuit. *Below Sea Level* (2008) chronicled the eccentric inhabitants of California’s Slab City and won the Orizzonti Best Documentary at Venice, while *El Sicario, Room 164* (2010) presented an unflinching interview with a Juárez cartel hitman. His 2013 masterpiece *Sacro GRA* lived for three years in a trailer by Rome’s ring road, becoming the first documentary ever to compete for—and win—the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. *Fire at Sea* (2016) captured the human face of the European migrant crisis on Lampedusa, securing the Golden Bear in Berlin and an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary. Later works such as *Notturno* (2020) and *In Viaggio: The Travels of Pope Francis* (2022) continued his commitment to long‑form, observational cinema, often serving as Italy’s official Oscar submission. Rosi’s personal life remains private; he has a daughter, Emma, from a previous marriage that ended in the late 2000s. Across more than three decades, Rosi has proved that *the quietest voices* can echo loudly on the world’s most prestigious stages.
