Gerhard Klein

Gerhard Klein (1 May 1920 – 21 May 1970) was a highly influential German film director and screenwriter whose work during the post-war era helped shape the cinematic identity of East Germany. Born in Berlin as the son of a lathe operator, Klein pursued filmmaking autodidactically from a young age, showing an early passion for the craft that would define his career. His political activism led to two arrests for involvement with the Communist Party's resistance organization, experiences that deeply informed his later artistic vision. During the Second World War, he served in the Wehrmacht, and after the conflict ended, he became active in the KPD's main youth committee and at the Berlin Magistrate's Youth Office, while also working as an animator.

From 1946, Klein began his professional career at DEFA, initially writing screenplays for short films and serving as an assistant director in the studio's newsreel and documentary division. In 1952, he transitioned to the DEFA studio for feature films, where he met his future wife, the children's writer Rosel Klein. Following a study trip to the USSR, he played a pivotal role in establishing the DEFA children's film studio. His landmark film Alarm im Zirkus (1954) introduced a groundbreaking documentary-style approach to depicting divided Berlin, and Berlin – Ecke Schönhauser (1957) became the first film to address juvenile delinquency in East Berlin.

Klein's most politically charged work, The Gleiwitz Case (1961), meticulously reconstructed the Nazi-staged attack on the Gleiwitz radio station. Afterwards, he focused on portraying everyday life in East Germany. From 1963 to 1967, he served as a member of the Volkskammer. Tragically, Klein fell ill in the spring of 1970 during the filming of Leichensache Zernik and died shortly afterwards, leaving the film to be completed posthumously.
