George C. Wolfe

George Costello Wolfe (born September 23, 1954) is an influential American stage and screen director, playwright, and producer whose career has reshaped modern American theatre. Born in Frankfort, Kentucky to educator Anna Lindsey and government clerk Costello Wolfe, he grew up attending a Rosenwald all‑black public school where his mother taught before moving to integrated public schools. He cultivated a love for drama at Frankfort High School, writing poetry and prose for the literary journal, and later pursued higher education at Kentucky State University, transferring to Pomona College where he earned a BA in theater. After teaching at the Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles, he moved to New York City and completed an MFA in dramatic writing and musical theatre at NYU in 1983, laying the academic groundwork for a prolific directing career.**

**Wolfe burst onto the New York scene in the late 1970s with Tribal Rites and quickly earned a reputation for daring, socially conscious productions such as The Colored Museum (1986) and Jelly’s Last Jam (1991), the latter garnering eleven Tony nominations. His direction of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: Millennium Approaches won his first Tony Award, and he followed with the Pulitzer‑winning Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk (1996), securing a second Tony. As artistic director of The Public Theater (1993‑2004), he championed new voices and innovative works, including Suzan‑Lori Parks’s Topdog/Underdog and the revival of The Iceman Cometh starring Denzel Washington. Wolfe’s film work includes the acclaimed HBO film Lackawanna Blues and the 2008 feature Nights in Rodanthe. In addition to his artistic achievements, he serves as chief creative officer for the Center for Civil & Human Rights in Atlanta and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2013.
