Gaylen Ross

Gaylen Ross, born August 15, 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana, is an American‑Israeli filmmaker whose career spans more than four decades of documentary storytelling and genre acting. Raised in the Midwest, she graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1967 before pursuing higher education at Monterey Peninsula College and earning a BA in Literature from The New School for Social Research, where she later served as managing editor of the literary journal Antaeus and Ecco Press. Ross first entered the public eye with a brief but memorable acting career, most notably portraying Francine "Fran Flygirl" Parker in George A. Romero’s seminal 1978 horror classic Dawn of the Dead, followed by roles in Madman (1981) and Creepshow (1982). Transitioning behind the camera, she founded GR Films and began directing documentaries that explore hidden economies, historical injustices, and human rights, including the acclaimed Dealers Among Dealers (1995) about New York’s diamond trade and the Emmy‑winning Blood Money: Switzerland’s Nazi Gold (1997). Her 2008 documentary Killing Kasztner examined the controversial life of Hungarian‑Jewish leader Rezso Kasztner, while later works such as To Russia for Love (1999) and Ximei (2019), produced with activist Ai Weiwei, investigated the global mail‑order bride industry and censorship in China. Ross’s commitment to investigative filmmaking earned her induction into the Indianapolis Public School Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame in 2015, underscoring her impact both as a storyteller and as an educator. Continuing to push boundaries, she is developing projects on the historic Village Gate nightclub, human‑rights activism, and the upcoming boxing documentary TitleShot (2023).
