Franc Francis George Roddam (born 29 April 1946) is a seminal English film director, businessman, screenwriter, television producer and publisher whose career has spanned more than five decades, shaping both British cinema and global television formats. After graduating from the London Film School, Roddam broke onto the scene with the cult classic Quadrophena (1979), a film that captured the mod subculture with vivid visual style and earned him a reputation as a daring auteur, and he later directed a varied slate of titles including The Lords of Discipline (1983), K2 (1991) and the anthology segment Aria (1987). Beyond the big screen, Roddam proved an innovative force in television, creating the beloved drama series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, which ran in its original incarnation from 1983 to 1986 and returned for new episodes in the early 2000s, and he served as executive producer and format creator for a string of successful series such as Making Out and Harry. His most far‑reaching contribution is the cooking competition franchise MasterChef, launched in 1990 and now broadcast in over 50 countries, cementing his legacy as a global format pioneer.
