Ellen Kuras

Ellen Kuras, born July 10, 1959 in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, is an American cinematographer whose visual sensibility has shaped both independent and studio cinema for more than three decades. Raised in a family of Polish descent, she overcame an early childhood fever that left her partially deaf, a challenge that sharpened her reliance on visual storytelling. After excelling as president of the National Honor Society at Cedar Grove High School, she earned a double degree in anthropology and semiotics from Brown University, then refined her craft studying photography at RISD and experimenting with 8 mm filmmaking in New York. A planned Fulbright study in Poland was thwarted by the imposition of martial law, but the setback redirected her toward documentary work, beginning with the groundbreaking 1987 film Samsara: Death and Rebirth in Cambodia, the first U.S. feature shot in post‑war Cambodia.

From that foundation Kuras built a prolific career that bridges avant‑garde narrative and hard‑hitting documentary. She captured the luminous, fractured memory of Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), collaborated with Spike Lee, Sam Mendes, Jim Jarmusch, and Martin Scorsese, and earned three Sundance Awards for dramatic cinematography for Personal Velocity: Three Portraits, Angela and Swoon. In 2008 she co‑directed, co‑wrote, co‑produced, and shot The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), a documentary nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and in 2010 she received a Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Non‑Fiction Filmmaking. As one of the few women admitted to the American Society of Cinematographers, she has been honored with the Women in Film Kodak Vision Award, the NY Women in Film and TV Muse Award, and numerous jury appointments at Sundance, Berlinale and Camerimage, cementing her status as a trailblazing visual architect who continues to mentor the next generation of filmmakers.
