Elegance Bratton

Elegance Bratton is an American filmmaker, photographer, writer, and producer whose work has become a vital voice for LGBTQ and marginalized communities. Born on May 3, 1979 in Jersey City, New Jersey, and raised in Phillipsburg, he endured extreme adversity when he was expelled from his home at sixteen for being gay, spending a decade living on the streets before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During his six‑year service he worked as a combat camera production specialist in Hawaii, honing the technical skills that would later inform his visually striking storytelling. After an honorable discharge he pursued academic study, earning a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from Columbia University and an MFA in directing and writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Bratton burst onto the film scene in the early 2010s, creating the photographic book Bound by Night, which was shortlisted for the 2014 Kassel photo‑book award, and directing the short film Walk for Me—a poignant exploration of trans motherhood in ballroom culture that later appeared on the Criterion Channel. His 2018 documentary Pier Kids followed three LGBTQ homeless youth in New York City, earning widespread media attention and solidifying his reputation as a compassionate documentarian. In 2021 he was honored with the Film Independent Truer Than Fiction Spirit Award, and his feature‑film debut The Inspection premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release by A24, showcasing his ability to blend personal narrative with broader social themes. Continuing his momentum, Bratton announced the 2025 documentary Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, slated for a Sundance premiere, and has received numerous fellowships and awards, including a United States Artists fellowship and the Breakthrough Director & Writer Award at the Montclair Film Festival. Through his multifaceted career, Bratton remains a powerful advocate for queer visibility, using both camera and pen to illuminate stories that might otherwise remain unseen.
