David Pablos

David Pablos is a Mexican director, editor, and screenwriter whose career began in the mid‑2000s after graduating from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico City. Born on 28 July 1983 in Tijuana, Baja California, he quickly distinguished himself by working with non‑professional actors and by emphasizing visual composition as a conduit for emotion, a philosophy he often describes as the camera should tell the scene. His early short film La Canción de los Niños Muertos (2008) earned the Ariel Award for Best Live‑Action Short and garnered a screening in the Critics’ Week at Cannes in 2009, signaling his arrival on the international festival circuit. Pablos followed that success with documentaries such as La Escritura en la Pared and Una Frontera, Todas las Fronteras (both 2010), exploring themes of border life and cultural identity. In 2013 he debuted his first feature, La Vida Después, a contemplative drama about two brothers searching for their estranged mother; the film received the Klic Award at Morelia and was the sole Mexican entry at the 70th Venice International Film Festival. His breakthrough arrived with Las Elegidas (2015), an unsettling yet lyrical portrait of kidnapping, white‑slave trafficking, and love, adapted from a novel by Jorge Volpi. The film competed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, won five Ariel Awards—including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay—and was later picked up by Netflix, expanding Pablos’s global audience.
