David L. Cunningham

David L. Cunningham, born on February 24, 1971, is an American documentarian and filmmaker whose career has spanned more than three decades across more than 40 countries. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in missionary work—his parents, Loren and Darlene Cunningham, were ordained Pentecostal ministers and founders of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and the University of the Nations—Cunningham was exposed early on to orphanages, refugee camps, and remote communities, experiences that profoundly shaped his worldview and narrative sensibility. He pursued formal film studies at the University of Southern California while also attending multiple campuses of the University of the Nations in Hawaii, Amsterdam, and Santiago, Chile, blending technical expertise with a global humanitarian perspective. His early documentaries, such as Pitcairn: Mutineers in Paradise (1991), took him to isolated locales like the Pitcairn Islands, and his feature debut Beyond Paradise (1998) achieved critical and commercial success in the Pacific, running for three months in Hawaiian theaters.

In 2000, with seed money from YWAM students, Cunningham produced the ambitious independent war drama To End All Wars (2001), starring Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, which toured major festivals including Telluride and Toronto before being picked up by Goldcrest and 20th Century Fox. He later directed the controversial ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11 (2006), which, despite a $40 million budget and seven Emmy nominations, sparked heated debate over its factual accuracy and political implications. Cunningham continued to explore challenging subjects with films like Hakani: A Survivor's Story (2008), which intersected indigenous rights and missionary activism, and maintained his commitment to nurturing emerging talent through The Film Institute, a nonprofit he co‑founded to empower filmmakers from developing nations. A member of the Directors Guild of America, the Travelers' Century Club, and an active advocate for socially conscious cinema, Cunningham remains a prolific creator, with recent projects including The Wind & the Reckoning (2022).
