Coline Serreau

Coline Serreau (born 29 October 1947 in Paris) is a seminal French actress, film director, and writer whose career has spanned more than five decades. Raised in a theatrical family—her father Jean‑Marie Serreau was a respected theatre director and her mother Geneviève Serreau an actress—she immersed herself early in the performing arts, studying literature, music, and theatre, and even mastering the organ and trapeze arts before stepping onto the professional stage. Her professional debut came in 1970 at the historic Théâtre du Vieux‑Colombier, and by 1973 she had already penned her first screenplay, signalling a swift transition from stage to screen. Serreau’s breakthrough film Pourquoi pas! (1977) captured European audiences with its nuanced love‑triangle narrative, but it was the 1985 comedy Trois hommes et un couffin—remade in the United States as Three Men and a Baby—that cemented her reputation as a commercial powerhouse, earning three César Awards and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
