Colin Nutley

Colin James Nutley (born 28 February 1944) in Gosport, England is an English filmmaker who has become one of the most influential figures in Swedish cinema. After studying at an art college in Portsmouth, he started his career in British television as a graphic designer before moving into drama and documentary work for ITV, BBC and Channel 4. His early British work included directing the first two episodes of the children’s series Press Gang, although he later asked for his name to be removed from the credits, and he was a key producer and director for the ITV‑networked series The Flockton Flyer in the late‑1970s. Nutley’s breakthrough in Sweden began with the television series Annika, followed by the documentary Where Roses Never Die, which inspired his celebrated film House of Angels (1992). The film won two Guldbagge Awards for Best Film and Best Direction and has remained a beloved classic in Swedish film history.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Nutley continued to explore a mix of comedy, drama and thriller genres, directing titles such as The Last Dance (1993), Under the Sun (1998) and adaptations of Liza Marklund novels like Deadline (2001) and Paradise (2003). His works have been repeatedly submitted by the Swedish Film Institute as potential Oscar entries, and Under the Sun earned a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film as well as the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival. In his personal life, Nutley married Swedish actress Helena Bergström in 1990; the couple have three children, including actress Molly Nutley. He splits his time between an apartment on Stockholm’s Kungsholmen island and a countryside house, maintaining a trans‑national presence that reflects his dual British‑Swedish identity.
