Chris Marker

Chris Marker (born Christian‑François Bouche‑Villeneuve on 1921‑07‑29 in Neuilly‑sur‑Seine, France) was a notoriously private French filmmaker, photographer, journalist and multimedia artist whose work defied easy categorisation. He grew up under the shadow of World War II, joining the French Resistance’s Maquis FTP and later, according to some accounts, serving briefly as a United States Air Force paratrooper, experiences that infused his later essayistic style with a deep suspicion of authority. After the war he began a prolific career writing for the intellectual journal Esprit, where he published poetry, short stories and film criticism, and he soon embarked on extensive travels that would become the backbone of his lifelong documentary practice. In the early 1950s Marker became a central figure of the Left Bank contingent of the French New Wave, befriending Alain Resnais, Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy, and he earned the 1954 Prix Jean Vigo for the anti‑colonial short Statues Also Die. His breakthrough came with the striking photomontage short La Jetée (1962), a haunting tale of time travel told almost entirely through still images, which later inspired Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys and Christopher Nolan’s Memento. The sprawling essay‑film Sans Soleil (1983) pushed the limits of documentary by weaving together travel footage, philosophical narration and fictional letters, establishing Marker as a master of cinematic memory. During the 1970s he devoted himself to the collective SLON/ISKRA, producing politically charged works such as ¡Cuba Sí! and Loin du Vietnam. From the mid‑1980s onward he embraced digital media, creating the interactive CD‑ROM Immemory, the chatbot Dialector and the pioneering multimedia installation Owls at Noon Prelude: The Hollow Men. In his final years Marker maintained a whimsical online presence under the avatar “Kosinki”, sharing diaporamas on YouTube and inhabiting Second Life as a cat named Guillaume‑en‑Égypte, thereby influencing a new generation of digital storytellers. He died on his 91st birthday, 2012‑07‑29, leaving a legacy that continues to shape experimental cinema, photography and multimedia art.
