Cal Dalton

Calvin Moore Dalton, professionally known as Cal Dalton, was an influential American animator and director who played a significant role in the golden age of animation at Warner Bros. Cartoons. Born on December 2, 1908, Dalton embarked on his animation career in 1930 when he secured his first commercial work at the short-lived Romer Grey Studios, a venture that would unfortunately prove ill-fated. His early career continued to gain momentum when he contributed to an animated short adaptation of The Wizard of Oz in 1933, which was produced by Ted Eshbaugh's independent animation studio. This experience led him to join the prestigious Leon Schlesinger Productions in 1934, where he made his debut working on Viva Buddy. During his tenure as an animator, Dalton contributed his talents to an impressive total of 33 Warner Bros. cartoons, establishing himself as a versatile and dedicated artist within the animation department. His skills were particularly showcased in 1937 when he worked on the Bob Clampett-directed segment for the film When's Your Birthday?, demonstrating his ability to bring characters to life with distinctive style and humor. Dalton's career trajectory took a significant turn in 1938 following the departure of legendary director Friz Freleng, when he received a promotion to the position of director. However, his directorial path was uniquely constrained; for reasons that remain unclear, studio executives never permitted him to serve as sole director. Instead, he was required to share his directorial responsibilities initially with Cal Howard, and subsequently with the more experienced Ben Hardaway. This arrangement created professional tension, as Dalton later expressed feeling aggrieved that despite being nominally in charge of Freleng's former unit, he found himself consistently overshadowed by Hardaway's veteran presence. Despite these challenges, Dalton made an indelible mark on animation history in 1939 when he co-directed Hare-um Scare-um alongside Hardaway. This pivotal short film featured a gray and white rabbit that would serve as the direct prototype for what eventually became the iconic Bugs Bunny. Throughout the period from 1938 to 1940, Dalton directed or co-directed a total of 17 Warner Bros. cartoons, leaving a substantial body of work. Following this productive period, he transitioned back to strictly animation work for the remainder of his Warner Bros. tenure, ultimately departing the studio in 1947. His final contributions included The Goofy Gophers (1947), which notably introduced those beloved characters to audiences for the first time, as well as uncredited animation work on the Daffy Duck cartoon Mexican Joyride (1947), bringing his distinguished career in theatrical animation to a close before his death on June 9, 1974.
