What's After the Movie
Bruno de Almeida (born 11 March 1965 in Paris, France) is a multifaceted independent filmmaker whose career spans more than four decades, weaving together fiction, documentary, music and multimedia installations. Raised in a Portuguese family and splitting his life between New York City and Lisbon since the mid‑1980s, he first emerged in the downtown music scene of the 1980s, playing guitar with Graham Haynes’ No Image and performing at venues such as The Knitting Factory and The Roulette, which laid the rhythmic foundation for his later cinematic work. In 1988 he joined the cooperative Film/Video Arts in New York, where he learned the craft of camerawork and editing, quickly moving from behind‑the‑camera roles to directing his own short documentary, Anti‑Glamour, about photographer Pepe Diniz. By 1990 he founded Arco Films, using it as a platform to produce and direct a series of ambitious projects, beginning with a concert video of fado legend Amália Rodrigues that was distributed by EMI. His early narrative success came with the short The Debt, which won the Cannes Critics’ Week award in 1993 and toured 85 festivals, establishing his reputation for blending lyrical storytelling with social observation. Feature films such as On the Run (1999) and The Art of Amália (2000) demonstrated his ability to move between thriller, drama and documentary while maintaining a distinctive visual style that often incorporates his own musical scores. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s he continued to explore Portuguese cultural icons, producing documentaries on Manuel João Vieira, the art collective Homeostética, and fado singers Camané and Celeste Rodrigues, each earning international festival accolades and strong DVD sales, especially in Portugal. In recent years he expanded into political thriller with Operation Autumn (2012) and returned to music composition with the multi‑volume album series Cinema Imaginado (2022‑2024), showcasing his ongoing commitment to cross‑disciplinary creativity and reinforcing his status as a bridge between Portuguese heritage and contemporary global cinema.
