What's After the Movie
Anne Wheeler (born Dorothy Anne Wheeler on September 23, 1946) is a trailblazing Canadian film and television writer, producer, and director whose career spans more than four decades. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, she earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Alberta before embarking on a brief stint as a computer programmer, a period that sharpened her analytical mind and later informed her meticulous approach to storytelling. Inspired by extensive travels abroad, Wheeler returned to Canada and co‑founded a film collective with longtime friends, marking the genesis of her cinematic journey. From 1975 to 1985 she worked for the National Film Board (NFB), where she crafted her first feature, A War Story (1981), a deeply personal recounting of her father Ben Wheeler’s experiences as a physician in a World War II prisoner‑of‑war camp; this early work cemented her reputation for weaving historical memory with intimate drama. Over the following years she explored war‑related themes in acclaimed titles such as Bye Bye Blues (1989) and The War Between Us (1995), while also breaking new ground with non‑NFB projects like Loyalties (1986). In addition to feature films, Wheeler has directed a prolific array of television episodes, contributing to beloved series including Anne with an E, Private Eyes, Strange Empire, The Romeo Section, The Guard, Da Vinci’s Inquest, and Cold Squad. Her deft direction earned four Genie Award nominations for Best Achievement in Direction and a Gemini win for the miniseries The Sleep Room (1998). In 2017 she received a Leo Award for Best Direction for the Hallmark movie Stop the Wedding. Recognized for her cultural impact, Wheeler was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995, awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, and became the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of Canada, underscoring her status as a pioneering figure in Canadian cinema.
