Amasi Martirosyan

Amasi Martirosyan (born 18 April 1897 in Yerevan, Armenia) was a pioneering figure in early Armenian cinema, renowned as a film director, screenwriter, and actor. His career spanned the formative years of Soviet‑Era filmmaking, beginning with his on‑screen debut in the silent drama Namus (1925) where he portrayed the character Smbat, and continuing through more than three decades of artistic activity. Martirosyan quickly demonstrated a versatile talent, appearing in subsequent silent productions such as Zare (1927) and Khaspush (1928), the latter of which also marked his entrance into behind‑the‑scenes work as an assistant director. In addition to acting, he contributed to the direction of notable films like Evil Spirit (1928) and later historical epics including David Bek (1944) and Anahit (1947), helping to shape narrative styles that blended Armenian folklore with Soviet cinematic techniques. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Martirosyan collaborated with leading studios in Yerevan, fostering a generation of filmmakers and refining his own directorial voice. His most celebrated directorial effort, The Song of First Love (1958), featured him in a brief but memorable role as a guard, illustrating his enduring willingness to appear on screen even after shifting primarily to directing and writing. By the end of his active period in 1963, he had left an indelible imprint on the cultural landscape, influencing both narrative structures and performance conventions in Armenian film. Martirosyan passed away on 21 December 1971 in his native Yerevan, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be studied by scholars of Soviet and Armenian cinema.
