The brightest star – from Dvořák to Piazzolla brings the legendary 12 cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker back to the magnificent Stadtcasino Music Hall after almost two decades, following their acclaimed Basel debut in 2007. In this explosive program the ensemble turns their twelve cellos into a full orchestra and takes the audience on a journey from anthemic romanticism to Broadway glamour, and finally to the heated world of Buenos Aires tango, showcasing why its unique sound has been celebrated worldwide for over 50 years. The concert opens with Part I: Julius Klengel – Hymnus, followed by Boris Blacher’s Blues, Espagnola, Rumba Philharmonica (1972/73), John Williams’s Catch Me If You Can (arranged by David Riniker), Nino Rota’s La Strada (arr. Wilhelm Kaiser‑Lindemann), George Gershwin’s Clap Yo’ Hands (arr. Michael Tsygutkin), and the classic Caravan by Juan Tizol & Duke Ellington (arr. Wilhelm Kaiser‑Lindemann). After a brief pause, Part II features Stéphane Koncz’s Swing on Dvořák, Michel Legrand’s The Windmills of Your Mind (arr. Michael Tsygutkin), Henri Bourtayre’s Fleur de Paris (arr. Ludwig Quandt), Vincent Scotto’s Under the Bridges of Paris (arr. Wilhelm Kaiser‑Lindemann), Édith Piaf’s La vie en rose (arr. Wilhelm Kaiser‑Lindemann), Burt Bacharach’s South American Getaway (arr. Valter Dešpalj), Horacio Salgán’s A Don Agustín Bardi (arr. David Riniker), Astor Piazzolla’s Adiós Nonino (arr. Julio Medaglia / Jacques Ammon), and Astor Piazzolla’s Fuga y Misterio (arr. José Carli) – subject to change and adjustments.
