President’s Young Performers Concert featuring the Singapore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jason Lai presents three exceptional new talents from Singapore: bassoonist Shi Jia Ao, soprano Natasha Da Costa, and violinist Kaelyn Soh. In this dazzling soloist showcase, Shi Jia Ao delights with a spirited rendition of Franz Berwald’s “Konzertstück for Bassoon and Orchestra, Op. 2,” Natasha Da Costa renders the lush and evocative poetry of Ravel’s “Shéhérazade” Song Cycle – a ballad straight from “The Arabian Nights,” and Kaelyn Soh enchants with the sweeping, cinematic beauty of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35,” whose themes echo the classic Hollywood scores of “Another Dawn,” “Anthony Adverse,” and “The Prince and the Pauper.” The program also includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Overture to The Wasps,” Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” (orchestrated by Caplet), George Butterworth’s “The Banks of Green Willow” during intermission, and a triumphant finale with Korngold’s cinematic concerto.
