Concert Film

Experience the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in all its grandeur as Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša and Taiwanese‑Australian violinist Ray Chen take the stage in this captivating concert film. The orchestra reaches colossal proportions for Richard Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony, featuring 64 strings, quadruple woodwinds, eight on‑stage horns and twelve off‑stage, four trumpets, four trombones, two tubas, two harps, an organ, a celesta, and an enormous battery of percussion. Hrůša’s masterful direction extracts every nuance from this massive soundscape, painting 22 vivid scenes of a mountain hike—hunting horns, chimes of cowbells, and the roar of waterfalls come alive in a sumptuous sonic fresco. After the alpine odyssey, the concert turns to the luminous Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, whose themes originally graced films such as *Another Dawn*, *Anthony Adverse*, and *The Prince and the Pauper*. Ray Chen delivers a stunning, “drop‑dead gorgeous” performance, bringing Korngold’s return to the classical repertoire after his Hollywood exile into sharp focus. A program introduction is delivered in German by Susanne Stähr from the KKL Luzern Auditorium. Check the details and tickets for this unforgettable journey.
