Under the baton of award‑winning conductor Christian Blex—who after triumphing in KORK’s 2025 conductor’s exam has been invited back to lead the ensemble—listeners are taken on an exhilarating tour of light and drama. The program kicks off with Georg Friedrich Händel’s iconic Music for the Royal Fireworks, a vivacious tapestry of dances celebrating the Peace of Aix‑la‑Chapelle in 1748. Though the original fireworks were modest, Händel’s music has become one of the most frequently performed Baroque classics, and the orchestra’s interpretation promises sparkling energy right from the start. Next, voice and string colors are united as violinist Janina Kronberger and violist Magnus Boye Hansen, soloists from KORK, take the stage for Benjamin Britten’s Concerto for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra. Britten began this modern concerto at the tender age of 18 as a student at the Royal College of Music in 1932; it was not completed until more than twenty years after his death, and it is now given its first full‑scale performances thanks to our talented soloists. Finally, the evening culminates with Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op 34, originally written in 1946 to accompany a British government educational film about orchestral instruments.
