The Beethoven Orchestra, led by conductor Bonnirk Kaftan, opens the evening with the shimmering overture to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s *The Sea Hawk*. The concert closes with Gustav Mahler’s *Symphony No. 1 in D major*, a bold musical collage that captures the turbulence and bright colours of a world on the cusp of modernity. Though a generation older than Korngold, Mahler was born only 100 km away and has opened doors to new musical horizons around 1900.
