Concert Film

Experience the electric energy of Cal Poly’s three premier ensembles in “Cal Poly Bandfest: Over Sky and Sea,” a season‑opening concert that sets the stage for an ambitious 2026 tour of Europe. This vibrant performance showcases the Mustang Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Orchestra, each bringing a carefully curated selection of American and international works that will expand the horizons of our student musicians. The Wind Orchestra dazzles with Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F,” Richard Saucedo’s evocative “Into the Clouds,” and Clare Grundman’s rousing rhapsody “Kentucky 1800,” which blends three American folk melodies into a soaring musical journey. The Wind Ensemble delivers a dynamic program of five pieces, featuring Stephen Bryant’s “Aloft,” Joseph Hellmesberger’s “Danse Diabolíque,” Michael Markowsi’s “Elixir,” and Jaromir Weinberger’s spirited “Polka and Fugue from ‘Schwanda, the Bagpiper’,” highlighted by the resonant Forbes Pipe Organ played by music major Olga Arutyunyan. Closing the night, the 220‑member Mustang Band energizes the crowd with fresh arrangements from this season’s field shows—“Marvel,” “Motown,” “Disney,” and “Shrek”—alongside beloved Cal Poly school songs that the group will later perform at Athletics events. This unforgettable concert is conducted by Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff with Associate Director Nicholas P. Waldron guiding the ensemble’s artistic vision.
