For the first time, the original score composed by Gottfried Huppertz is performed live by the Babelsberg Film Orchestra, whose more than a century of history is inseparably linked to the film’s production in Potsdam‑Babelsberg. Premiered 11 January 1927 at the Ufa‑Palast am Zoo, Metropolis is the world’s only film granted UNESCO World Heritage status—a testament to its blend of technology‑obsession, romance, popular appeal and avant‑garde vision. The film’s saga includes massive production costs, post‑production cuts against Lang’s will, and the miraculous 2008 recovery of long‑lost footage in Buenos Aires.
