Driven by renewed interest on streaming platforms, Sydney Sweeney’s independent horror film Immaculate is experiencing a significant resurgence. According to streaming data aggregator FlixPatrol, the movie has raced up the HBO Max global charts to become the second most popular film worldwide. This success echoes the film’s strong performance in theaters last year, where it was a notable financial success.
The 2024 release, directed by Michael Mohan, stars Sweeney as Sister Cecilia, a devout American nun whose new life at an Italian convent descends into a nightmare. Praised by critics as an exceptional entry in the Catholic horror subgenre, the film was noted for its tense atmosphere and sensual undertones. Beyond her lead role, Sweeney also served as a producer on the project after purchasing the rights to the script.
Immaculate proved to be a profitable venture from its theatrical run. Released on March 22, 2024, the film earned $35 million globally against a modest production budget of $9 million. This performance was a significant achievement for the independent distributor Neon. The film’s current success on HBO Max demonstrates its lasting appeal and ability to find a large audience in the streaming window.
Sydney Sweeney’s schedule remains busy following the massive success of her recent film, The Housemaid, which has grossed over $247 million at the box office. Her upcoming appearances include a cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and a leading role in the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, debuting on April 12. Furthermore, a sequel to The Housemaid, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, has already been greenlit by Lionsgate. Based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s series, filming is expected to begin this year for a potential 2027 release.
