The filmmaker described sending the final script to King for approval as the “scariest moment” for the creative team, particularly due to tweaks made to the story’s ending, which King ultimately endorsed.

Lawrence noted that King’s primary concern was ensuring the film did not “water down” the brutal nature of the original story, especially regarding the graphic deaths of the young participants. The author, having been “burned on another project,” wanted to confirm that the studio would not soften the violence or language to achieve a safer PG-13 rating. Fortunately, Lionsgate fully supported Lawrence’s vision to maintain the story’s harsh authenticity.
