James Gunn Questions Long-Term Future as DC Studios Co-CEO

James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has openly doubted the sustainability of his multifaceted role overseeing the DC Universe while simultaneously writing and directing its films. Following his work on the upcoming Superman movie, which he called the hardest film he has ever directed, Gunn admitted in a recent interview with Variety that the immense workload may not be feasible indefinitely. The filmmaker compared his unprecedented position to that of a producer like Walt Disney, but emphasized his passion for remaining hands-on with the creative process.

The Unique Challenge of Leading and Creating

Gunn explained that his approach to rebuilding the DCU differs significantly from his work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He noted that while Guardians built a new corner of a universe, his current task involves reorienting characters and a world that audiences already feel they know. He described Superman as “the most comic-book-driven thing” he has ever done. Gunn initially declined the executive role because he didn’t want to emulate Marvel’s Kevin Feige, but the opportunity to work alongside co-CEO Peter Safran ultimately convinced him.

The Strain of a Demanding Schedule

The sheer volume of work is the primary source of Gunn’s uncertainty. After directing Superman, he is already slated to helm its sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in July 2027. This continuous cycle of high-level executive duties combined with the intense creative focus required for directing leaves little room for anything else. Gunn stated, “It’s an experiment. And yes, sometimes it probably sounds like madness — especially since I don’t make the most conventional films. But I love big spectacle. That’s my jam.”

What’s Next for the DCU

While Gunn’s future as an executive remains an open question, the DCU continues to move forward. The next major film on the calendar is Supergirl, releasing this summer. Following that, Superman: Man of Tomorrow will introduce David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent/Superman, alongside a cast including Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film will also feature Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr. and recently cast Lars Eidinger as the villain Brainiac.
