Yôko Katsuragi

Yōko Katsuragi (born Sumie Tomizawa) was a prominent Japanese actress whose career spanned the golden age of post‑war cinema, lasting from 1948 to 1963. Born on 20 October 1930 in the Yotsuya district of Tokyo, she entered the entertainment world just as Japan was rebuilding its cultural identity, and quickly became a favored face of the Shochiku studio. Her elegant screen presence and ability to embody both fragile innocence and resilient determination made her a frequent collaborator of director Keisuke Kinoshita, under whose guidance she delivered memorable performances in films such as The Portrait (1948) and A Japanese Tragedy (1953). In addition to Kinoshita, Katsuragi worked with cinematic legends including Yasujirō Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse, and Masaki Kobayashi, appearing in Late Spring (1949), Scandal (1950), Battle of Roses (1950) and Fountainhead (1956) respectively. Critics often praised her subtle expressiveness, noting how she could convey deep emotional currents without overt melodrama, a quality that resonated in later works like Times of Joy and Sorrow (1957) and White Fangs (1960). Off‑screen, she married acclaimed composer Toshiro Mayuzumi in 1953, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1997 and produced one child, a son who later married actress Yoshie Taira. After retiring from acting in 1963, Katsuragi stepped back from the public eye, living a private life until her death in March 2007 at the age of 76. Her legacy endures through the enduring popularity of the classic films she helped shape, and she remains a celebrated figure among enthusiasts of mid‑twentieth‑century Japanese cinema.
