Willie Tyler

Willie Tyler, born on September 8, 1940 in Red Level, Alabama, is a pioneering American ventriloquist, comedian, and actor whose career spans more than five decades. From an early fascination with making his dummy Lester speak, Tyler broke into the national spotlight when he appeared on Rowan & Martin's Laugh‑In in 1972, becoming one of the few Black ventriloquists to achieve mainstream recognition. He recorded the Motown album Hello Dummy in 1965 and, although his follow‑up Cannibal never saw release, the effort underscored his versatility as a musical performer. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Tyler and Lester made memorable television appearances on shows such as The Jeffersons, The White Shadow, The Parent ’Hood, and the ABC Weekend Specials, where his blend of sharp wit and skilled dummy work won audiences of all ages. In addition to sitcom guest spots, he lent his charismatic presence to countless commercials for brands like McDonald’s, Toyota, and Maxwell House, cementing his status as a recognizable face in advertising. His unique talent earned him the distinction of being the first ventriloquist to feature on David Letterman’s Late Show during the 2006 Ventriloquist Week, and he later appeared in the ventriloquist‑themed documentary I’m No Dummy (2009). More recent credits include a cameo as a 1972 TV version of himself on the sitcom The Kids Are Alright (2019) and a performance alongside Adam Sandler in the Netflix special Love You (2024). Tyler’s enduring appeal lies in his ability to fuse comedy, storytelling, and ventriloquism into a seamless act that has entertained multiple generations. His contributions have paved the way for future performers, establishing a legacy that continues to inspire both fans and aspiring artists alike.
