What's After the Movie
Will Roberts (21 December 1907 – 11 March 2000) was a Welsh expressionist painter whose work captured the rugged spirit of industrial South Wales and the quiet dignity of its rural landscapes. Born in Ruabon, Denbighshire, to a railwayman on the Great Western Railway, he moved with his family to Neath in 1918, where the stark contrast between coal‑filled valleys and pastoral farmland would later inform his visual vocabulary. From 1928 he attended Swansea Art School part‑time for four years under the tutelage of William Grant Murray, honing a draughtsman’s precision that would become a hallmark of his later charcoal studies. In 1945 he encountered the Polish émigré artist Josef Herman, whose devotion to expressionism resonated deeply with Roberts; the two often painted side‑by‑side in Ystradgynlais, and Herman’s influence is evident in Roberts’ bold brushwork and emotive colour palette.
Roberts devoted his career to portraying the everyday lives of Welsh workers, farmers, and families, producing seminal works such as Farm at Cimla (1962), which earned the Byng‑Stamper Prize and was acquired by the National Museum of Wales. His reputation grew throughout the latter half of the 20th century, culminating in an honorary Fellowship from University College, Swansea (1992) and a major retrospective at the National Eisteddfod of Wales (1994). As a founding member of the 56 Group Wales, he helped elevate modern Welsh art on the national stage. In his later years he donated 600 drawings to the National Library of Wales, and his 24 charcoal Stations of the Cross remain on display at St David’s Church in Neath. A posthumous memorial exhibition in 2001 reaffirmed his status as one of Wales’s modern masters, ensuring his legacy endures in both public collections and the collective memory of Welsh cultural history.
