Canadian and American actor William Emerson Arnett achieved fame for his roles as Gob Bluth in Arrested Development and as the title character in the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman. Arnett's performance in the former earned him nominations for seven Primetime Emmy Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. He is also known for his recurring role as Devon Banks in the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. Arnett has held other notable television roles, including the NBC sitcom Up All Night, the CBS sitcom The Millers, and the Netflix mystery series Murderville. His filmography includes Let's Go to Prison, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro, G-Force, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & its sequel. Despite his success in comedy, Arnett emphasizes that he is an 'actor first'. He is additionally recognized for his deep baritone voice, which he has lent to works such as Danny Phantom, Ratatouille, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Despicable Me.
Arnett was born in Toronto, Ontario, to parents of Manitoba origin. His father was a corporate lawyer and brewer, while his mother encouraged him to pursue an acting career. As a teenager, Arnett moved to New York City to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. He later became an avid hockey fan and workout enthusiast. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Arnett appeared in several unsuccessful television pilots, but his career took off dynamically with the success of Arrested Development. More recently, Arnett co-created and starred in the Netflix comedy-drama series Flaked and the comedy podcast SmartLess. Influenced by Steve Martin and Chevy Chase, Arnett identifies primarily as an actor, demonstrating a range that includes both drama and comedy.
