Wilda Bennett

Wilda Bennett (December 19, 1894 – December 20, 1967) was an American stage and screen actress whose career spanned the golden age of Broadway musical comedies and the early sound era of Hollywood. Born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, she was the daughter of John H. Bennett, a city building inspector, and displayed an early talent for singing, possessing a sweet soprano voice that later became a hallmark of her theatrical performances. Bennett made her Broadway debut in the winter of 1911‑1912 with Everywoman and quickly became a sought‑after leading lady, appearing in productions such as A Good Little Devil (1913), The Only Girl (1914‑1915), The Riviera Girl (1917), The Girl Behind the Gun (1918‑1919), and the eponymous Madame Pompadour (1924‑1925). Her versatility allowed her to transition to revues like the Music Box Revue (1921‑1922) and later to the stage comedies Lovely Lady (1928) and Merrily We Roll Along (1934). In addition to live theatre, Bennett lent her voice to a 1927 radio adaptation of The Only Girl, showcasing the breadth of her performance media. Bennett’s filmography, though not extensive, includes noteworthy titles such as the lost silent short A Good Little Devil (1914), the crime drama Bullets or Ballots (1936), and several classic 1939 productions—Dark Victory, The Women, What a Life, and Ninotchka—culminating with a role in The Lady Eve (1941). Her personal life, however, drew equal or greater public attention; she endured a series of high‑profile lawsuits, a scandal‑laden car accident, and a 1932 arrest for drunken disorderliness. She married four times—actor‑producer Robert Schable, Argentine dancer Abraham "Peppy" de Albrew, engineer Anthony J. Wettach, and mining executive Munro Whitmore—each union ending in divorce or widowhood. Despite the turbulence, Bennett remained a charismatic presence on stage until the mid‑1930s and left an indelible imprint on early American musical theatre before passing away in Winnemucca, Nevada on December 20, 1967.
