What's After the Movie
Walter Lawrence Burke was an American character actor whose career spanned over half a century, encompassing stage, film, and television. Born on August 25, 1908, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Irish immigrants Bedelia McNamara and Thomas Burke, a trotting‑horse breeder who owned farms in Ireland and Scotland. From a teenage age he gravitated toward the footlights, making his Broadway debut in Dearest Enemy during the 1925–1926 season, and quickly accumulated an impressive roster of theatrical credits that included Padlocks of 1927, Madame Butterfly, Sadie Thompson, and Major Barbara. His striking Irish features and distinctive voice often led casting directors to assign him Irish or English roles, while his modest stature made him an instantly recognizable presence even in brief supporting parts. Burke transitioned to the silver screen in 1948 with an uncredited role in The Naked City and soon secured a memorable turn as “Sugar Boy” in the Oscar‑winning All the King’s Men (1949), after which he appeared in more than twenty‑two additional films such as The President’s Analyst and The Stone Killer. By the early 1950s he had turned his attention to the burgeoning medium of television, where he became a prolific guest star, appearing in episodes of Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, Bewitched, The Munsters, Lost in Space, and countless other series, often portraying a different character each time. His five appearances as Tim Potter in Black Saddle and recurring roles on Perry Mason showcase his versatility, while his work on The Virginian and The Big Valley cemented his reputation as a reliable Western character actor. Off‑screen, he married actress Kathryn Patricia Rooney in 1937, fathered four children—Catherine, Margaret, Deborah, and Leslie—and later split his time between a Hollywood career and a family farm in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, where he occasionally taught dramatics. Walter Burke died of emphysema on August 4, 1984, at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, leaving behind a legacy of more than a hundred television appearances and a body of work that continues to be celebrated by classic‑film and TV aficionados.
