Victoria Grace

Victoria Marion Grace (born 4 December 1953) is a renowned New Zealand academic whose career has spanned over three decades of interdisciplinary research in the sociology of health, feminist theory, and critical philosophy. After earning a BA in English from the University of Otago, she pursued a Master of Social Science and a Diploma of Psychology at the University of Waikato before completing a PhD in Sociology at the University of Canterbury in 1989. Her early appointment as a lecturer in Sociology at Massey University laid the groundwork for a long‑standing affiliation with the University of Canterbury, where she progressed from Gender Studies to a full professorship in Sociology and was granted professor emeritus status in 2016. Grace’s scholarship is marked by a sustained focus on women’s experiences of chronic pelvic pain, chronic fatigue, and the sociocultural implications of medical technologies such as Viagra, IVF, and donor insemination. She has also become an international authority on the application of Jean Baudrillard’s ideas to feminist discourse, producing seminal works such as Baudrillard’s Challenge, A Feminist Reading (2000) and Baudrillard and Lacanian Psychoanalysis (2022). In addition to her monographs, she has co‑edited volumes on sexual violence and forensic DNA evidence, reflecting a commitment to bridging theory and public policy. Her research has attracted major funding from the Health Research Council and successive Marsden grants, enabling collaborative projects that examine the epistemology of DNA evidence in legal contexts and the everyday realities of women navigating chronic health conditions. Throughout her career, Grace has mentored countless graduate students, contributed to national research committees, and consistently advocated for the inclusion of feminist perspectives in health sociology, solidifying her legacy as a pivotal figure in contemporary social science.
