Tutta Rolf

Tutta Rolf, born Solveig Jenny Berntzen on October 7, 1907, in Kristiania, Norway (now Oslo), was a prominent Norwegian-Swedish actress and singer who captivated audiences throughout the 1930s with her versatile performances in both film and theatre. Beginning her career in the early 1930s, she quickly established herself as a notable figure in Scandinavian cinema, appearing in a total of 14 films between 1932 and 1939, including notable works such as Servant's Entrance (1932), Lucky Devils (1932), and Swedenhielms (1935). Her early career included an appearance in Paramount on Parade (1930), where she performed alongside her first husband, the celebrated Swedish actor and singer Ernst Rolf, whom she married in 1930. Despite their divorce just two years later in 1932, she retained the professional name Tutta Rolf, which would become synonymous with her artistic identity throughout her career, and she continued to build her reputation across Norwegian and Swedish entertainment industries.

Beyond her film work, Rolf's personal life was marked by high-profile marriages that reflected her international connections and artistic circles. In 1936, she married American director Jack Donohue, a union that lasted until 1950 and produced her daughter Jill Donohue, who would follow in her mother's footsteps as an actress. Her final marriage in 1953 was to the distinguished Swedish director and actor Hasse Ekman, remaining together until 1972. From her first marriage to Ernst Rolf, she had her son Tom Rolf, who would achieve significant acclaim in Hollywood as an Academy Award–winning film editor. Throughout her relatively brief but impactful acting career, she demonstrated remarkable versatility in roles ranging from romantic comedies to dramatic features, working with some of the most respected directors of the Swedish film industry's golden age. After retiring from acting in 1939 following roles in films such as Variety Is the Spice of Life and Whalers, Rolf eventually settled in the United States, where she lived until her death on October 26, 1994, in Los Angeles at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy as one of the notable Scandinavian performers of her era who successfully bridged the worlds of Norwegian, Swedish, and American entertainment industries.
