Tony Beckley

Derek Anthony Beckley, known as Tony Beckley, was a notable English actor born on 7th October 1929. Having honed his talents at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Beckley went on to establish a successful career on film and television throughout the 1960s and 1970s, often performing villainous roles. Additionally, he was a veteran of numerous stage productions. Born to Beatrice Mitchell in Southampton, Hampshire, England, Beckley grew up largely raised by his aunt due to his mother's work commitments as a ship steward. Beckley found his acting passion during the Second World War when he was attending boarding school at Winton House in Winchester. At just 16, he left school to chase his acting aspirations, working as a stage sweeper and tea maker before moving to London. Here, he engaged in odd jobs while watching and learning from renowned actors like Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, and Alec Guinness. Beckley joined the Royal Navy before his 18th birthday, utilizing his time onboard to prepare for admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). After graduating from RADA, Beckley began his acting journey that lasted until his death in 1980. Notable roles include his film debut in 1965 in Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight, and as Camp Freddie in The Italian Job (1969). On television, he played the villainous Harrison Chase in the six-part Doctor Who serial The Seeds of Doom (1976). He also remained active in theatre and was set to embark on more projects in the US before his untimely death. According to friend Sheila Hancock, his death was likely AIDS-related before the disease was well understood.

In an interview in 1979, Beckley stated that he owed his acting career to his craving for attention, something he lacked growing up. Famed for playing villains and psychopaths on screen, Beckley was known to friends as a great storyteller and characterized by his friendly and funny nature. For more than 15 years, Beckley was in a relationship with film producer Barry Krost, who produced Beckley's last film, When a Stranger Calls. Despite maintaining a house in Fulham, London, Beckley spent the last year of his life living in West Hollywood, California.
