Thelma Houston (née Jackson) is an American singer and actress whose career spans more than five decades, making her a resilient figure in the evolving landscape of popular music and television. Born on May 7, 1946 in Leland, Mississippi, she grew up in a modest household where her mother worked as a cotton picker and later relocated with her three sisters to Long Beach, California, a move that exposed her to the vibrant West Coast music scene. After marrying young and having two children, Houston joined the gospel group Art Reynolds Singers, a turning point that led to her first recording contract with Dunhill Records and the release of her debut album Sunshower in 1969, produced by Jimmy Webb.
