Thelma Houston

Thelma Houston (née Jackson) is an American singer and actress whose career spans more than five decades, making her a resilient figure in the evolving landscape of popular music and television. Born on May 7, 1946 in Leland, Mississippi, she grew up in a modest household where her mother worked as a cotton picker and later relocated with her three sisters to Long Beach, California, a move that exposed her to the vibrant West Coast music scene. After marrying young and having two children, Houston joined the gospel group Art Reynolds Singers, a turning point that led to her first recording contract with Dunhill Records and the release of her debut album Sunshower in 1969, produced by Jimmy Webb. Despite early struggles at Motown, her powerful vocals earned a Billboard R&B chart entry with “You’ve Been Doing Wrong for So Long,” and she began to appear on television, notably in The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine and the TV film Death Scream. The breakthrough came in 1977 when her rendition of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” topped the Hot 100 and R&B charts, securing a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and cementing her status as a disco‑era icon. Over the 1980s and 1990s she diversified into acting roles in films such as Game Show Models and Beloved, while continuing to record, collaborate with artists like Jerry Butler, and perform on soundtracks for movies including Thank God It’s Friday and Lean on Me. In recent years Houston has embraced stage productions, toured with Nile Rodgers and Chic, and appeared on reality television, most prominently reaching the semifinals of The Masked Singer in 2024 as “Clock.” Her enduring rendition of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” remains a staple on dance floors and television specials, illustrating her lasting influence on both the music industry and popular culture.
