Floyd John "Ted" Welch was born on October 17, 1892 in the small town of Coyville, Kansas, a community that at the turn of the twentieth century was defined by its agricultural roots and modest population. Growing up in a modest farming family, Welch displayed an early fascination with baseball, often tossing makeshift balls in the fields and quickly developing a reputation for his strong right‑handed arm despite batting left‑handed, a rare combination that would later intrigue scouts. By his teenage years he was a standout pitcher for local semi‑professional teams, earning the nickname “Ted” as a friendly abbreviation of his middle name, John, and impressing regional observers with his ability to control the strike zone and his unconventional pitching motion.

In 1914, at the age of twenty‑one, Welch earned a contract with the St. Louis Terriers of the short‑lived Federal League, a bold challenger to the established American and National Leagues. His Major League debut came on May 15, 1914, and over the course of the season he appeared in three relief outings, posting a win–loss record of 0‑0, an earned run average of 6.00, and striking out two batters. He lived a quiet life in Great Bend, Kansas, where he passed away on January 6, 1943, at the age of fifty.
