What's After the Movie
Tala Birell (born Natalie Bierle on 10 September 1907 in Bucharest, then part of the Kingdom of Romania) was the daughter of Bavarian businessman Karl Bierle and Stefanie von Schaydakowska, a Galician émigrée. Raised in a multilingual household, she gravitated toward the performing arts early, receiving vocal and dramatic training in Vienna where she first appeared on stage. By the late 1920s she was already working in German cinema, occasionally standing in for Marlene Dietrich in high‑profile productions. The Oakland Tribune noted her breakthrough in a Berlin hit production of Madame Pompadour, after which she attracted attention from international directors. In 1930 she crossed the English Channel to star in E. A. Dupont’s Menschen im Käfig, the German‑language version of Cape Forlorn, and soon after traveled to the United States to film the German version of The Boudoir Diplomat. Her fluency in several languages and elegant screen presence made her a natural fit for the cosmopolitan roles of the early sound era. Settling in Hollywood, Birell quickly became a sought‑after character actress, often cast as aristocratic or European figures. She delivered a memorable turn as Mrs. Lehman in Bringing Up Baby (1938) and appeared in such titles as The Purple Heart, The Monster Maker and The Song of Bernadette (uncredited). On Broadway she appeared in Order Please (1934) and later in the 1940 production of My Dear Children at the Belasco Theatre. In the early 1950s she transitioned to television, guest‑starring in the anthology series Orient Express (“The Red Sash”). Birell’s career waned after 1955, and she died on 17 February 1958 in Landstuhl, West Germany, at the age of 50. She was interred in a family tomb in the Bavarian village of Marquartstein, where her grave remains a quiet tribute to a trans‑Atlantic talent.
